An eating disorder is defined as pathological eating behavior that leads to psychological suffering when it is repetitive on a long period of time.
It is still difficult to pinpoint the origin of this behavior. It is multifactorial. There may be a genetic factor, a strict diet at puberty, or hormonal changes. In any case, it’s linked to low self-esteem, distorted body image and obsessive thinking. This is known as dysmorphophobia.
The societal environment also plays a crucial role in promoting the aesthetic diktats of “staying slim and young”, while temptations to eat ever more sugary and fatty foods abound. It’s most often at puberty that the disorder develops, and girls are most affected, although boys are not spared. The physical and psychological consequences can be devastating for both the person affected and those around them.
All these signs are often accompanied by denial, and it’s those close to the patient who notice that there’s a problem.
Whatever type of eating behavior a person suffers from, the multifactorial origin must be taken into account when treating the disorder. Various therapeutic approaches can be considered, such as family therapy, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), nutrition and dietetics, and

and hypnosis.
