séance hypnose ericksonienne

Definition of Ericksonian hypnosis

Milton Erickson, an American psychiatrist who died in 1980, drew on his experiences with patients while reflecting deeply on the human capacity to use inner resources to heal. He deduced that the resources lay in the unconscious, and that the best way to access them was to use an altered state of consciousness.

Hypnosis has always been used by shamans to heal illnesses through the trance state. Freud himself used hypnosis, but soon gave it up to devote himself to psychoanalysis. While the latter focuses on the “why”, Ericksonian hypnosis prefers to emphasize the “how”.

Hypnosis is a tool used by the hypnotherapist to induce an altered state of consciousness similar to the state we experience when we are about to fall asleep. The hypnotherapist then simply suggests to the unconscious mind, which integrates and implements the new behaviors.

The benefits

Hypnosis isn’t magic, and it doesn’t work without a real desire to change. Its growing success is undoubtedly due to the fact that it is a brief, practical therapy, even if this notion is relative. Hypnosis enables you to evolve towards greater autonomy by using your inner resources.

The limits

Hypnotherapy uses the tool of hypnosis, but in no way replaces a consultation with a doctor for medical advice. Hypnotherapists cannot diagnose.

Hypnosis is not recommended for certain mental pathologies, such as severe personality disorders, psychosis or epilepsy, without prior medical advice.

méthode ericksonienne

What’s the difference between humanist hypnosis and the Ericksonian method?

Both techniques induce an altered state of consciousness, but humanist hypnosis has a spiritual dimension.

In Ericksonian hypnosis, the person is more passive; the hypnotherapist suggests directly to the subconscious, acting on a slight dissociation based on the principle that the subconscious is the main interlocutor. The analytical mind takes a break. It’s a state of deep relaxation.

L’humanistic hypnosison the other hand, awakens to a wider dimension than the small ego, encompassing both the analytical mind and the unconscious. We associate people with their surroundings, so that they feel at home in the space. The boundary between inside and outside is diluted yet fully present in the observation. We discover a dimension of being invisible in everyday life.

Who can be an Ericksonian hypnosis practitioner?

The Ericksonian hypnosis practitioner has trained in a recognized school and passed exams to obtain certification. He/she must also have a good knowledge of psychopathology and have done a great deal of work on him/herself. Hypnotherapists improve their skills through continuing education and supervision.

When can hypnosis be used?

Depending on the challenges faced by the consultant, the hypnosis practitioner will decide on the most appropriate therapeutic method, or opt for a combination of several approaches over the course of the sessions. Situations for which you may consider a hypnosis session include:

hypnose ericksonienne

How does a session with a hypnotherapist work?

After the first anamnesis session, support continues with sessions during which the hypnotherapist induces a state of deep relaxation to suggest to the unconscious what it needs to integrate in order to achieve the aimed solution.

Then the hypnotherapist brings the person back to full wakefulness. You can talk about your experience or not, as you wish. Waking up feels like a good nap. We’re a little numb. The effect passes very quickly, in just a few minutes, whereas relaxation lasts longer.
